El maltrato infantil es el conjunto de manifestaciones crónicas, persistentes y muy destructivas que amenazan el normal desarrollo psicológico del niño. Estas conductas comprenden insultos, desprecios, rechazos, indiferencia, confinamientos, amenazas, burlas, criticas o aislamiento que causen, o puedan causar, deterioro en el desarrollo emocional, social e intelectual del niño. Este tipo de maltrato, ocasiona que en los primeros años de niño, éste no pueda desarrollar adecuadamente el apego, y en los años posteriores se sienta exclusivo de ambiente familiar y social, afectado su autoestima y sus habilidades sociales.
