Abordaje integral con criterios clínicos, diagnósticos y terapéuticos para el manejo de meningitis bacteriana en pacientes mayores de 1 año.

Abstract

Bacterial Meningitis is a pathology that is characterized by directly affecting the central nervous system being an imminent public health problem, due to the irreversible complications that it can cause if it is not diagnosed in a timely manner. After the incorporation of the pneumococcal vaccine in the vaccination scheme since two months of age, morbidity and mortality have decreased, however, new suspected cases of this disease continue to emerge; which gives rise to the need to carry out an integral approach with clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic criteria for the management of bacterial meningitis in patients older than 1 year, through scientific literature review; in articles, books and clinical practice guides, to describe the fundamental bases that allow to establish a medical diagnosis, according to the clinical manifestations presented by patients in the pediatric age. The treatment is focused according to the medical diagnosis and will be carried out in two phases; the first one is of an empirical nature, this happens before performing the complementary tests and the second phase is directly scientific; based on the performance of laboratory tests such as: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a study in the cerebrospinal fluid for chemical, cytological and microbiological analysis that will determine the causative agent and the drugs of choice for immediate and timely treatment, In addition, imaging tests such as computerized axial tomography can be included to detect abnormalities and prevent future complications.
