Tratamiento de atención primaria de fracturas del radio distal en el adulto mayor

Abstract

Introduction: Fractures of the distal radius are an increasingly frequent problem in the older adult, which entails a significant economic burden on the health care system and functional dependence and complications in the patient. There is controversy regarding conservative and surgical treatment in this age group. Objective: To determine the therapeutic options in primary care for distal radius fractures in older adults. Materials and methods: A bibliographic search of articles related to the treatment of distal radius fractures in primary care in older adults published in the last 5 years in English and Spanish was carried out in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, WoS, LILACS, Cochrane Library, Elsevier and other sources (Google Scholar). Results: We obtained 21 records in PubMed/MEDLINE, 23 in WoS, 3 in LILACS, 1 systematic review in Cochrane Library, 7 in Elsevier and 4 in other sources. 51 records were examined after eliminating duplicate items. Finally, 34 articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed in this literature review. Conclusion: Conservative treatment of these fractures is cost-effective, allowing an important saving of resources and with excellent final results in functionality and low rates of reinterventions.
