Implementación de un sistema de soporte de decisiones para gestión académica de la UTMACH

Abstract

Data science and business intelligence (BI) have become indispensable tools due to their ability to analyze and maximize the information from all types of businesses. The Technical University of Machala (UTMACH) has a transactional system that facilitates the daily management of data without being used for analysis. For this reason, a decision support system (DSS) based on key performance indicators (KPIs) for academic management has been developed as part of the SIUTMACH system, for the visualization of relevant data for the main authorities; Rector and vice-rectors, faculty authorities; deans and vice-deans, career coordinators and departmental directors. For its implementation, a quasi-experimental design was adopted, applying the interview technique to stakeholders with the purpose of collecting and defining KPIs. Best practices for the definition of these indicators were applied, using business intelligence to identify relevant indicators, and the VROps methodology - A methodology for creating dashboards, along with the most suitable technologies, such as; libraries, the Angular framework for web development and information visualization, as well as the GraphQL Application Programming Interface (API) provided by the IT team to access the academic data from the university server. Subsequently, the system's performance and acceptance were evaluated using the ISO/IEC 9126 standard and surveys directed at experts and administrative staff. Finally, it is concluded that, after applying the hypothesis test for proportions, there is sufficient statistical evidence to affirm that the proportion of users highly satisfied with the DSS is greater than 80% with a significance level of 5%. Likewise, its application in the educational field has the potential to be replicated in other institutions, positively impacting the academic sphere at the national and regional level
