Productos cosméticos: toxicidad y control

Abstract

The cosmetic industry at a global and national level is one of the sources that generates the highest income for countries, when consuming them for their extensive functions at the body level, however, it is also a source of release of toxic elements for humans. When making cosmetics, a series of requirements must be covered and within them are its ingredients, which must be innocuous and safe, and appear within the list of ingredients for cosmetics of the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America (FDA), Cosmetics Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA), European Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association (COLIPA) and the Directives of the European Union. This work carried out a review on the control of cosmetics by monitoring their preparation, framing the role of the forensic chemical expert according to the technical regulations of our country. Generalities of toxicity of these products were established due to their chemical components, their impact on human health and a technical regulation that allows their regularization and control, as well as the identification of the appropriate methodology to determine heavy metals in these products. The methodology used was descriptive, collecting information in different bibliographic sources that support data on the control of cosmetic products. The composition and elaboration of cosmetics imported into our country, the impact of those toxic components on the health of consumers, were monitored, establishing the Atomic Absorption Spectrometry method to determine heavy metals in these products.
