Abstract

The generation of solid waste is an environmental problem in any part of the world, whether in developed or developing countries. For this reason, the most appropriate alternatives for an urban solid waste management plan in the canton of La Victoria were selected using a qualitative and quantitative approach, with a bibliographical research as a reference. Civil engineering has the responsibility of safeguarding the environment and meeting the needs of the inhabitants, for this reason the management plan proposed in this practical research work includes processes such as recycling and composting at the source it is considered an economical and easy technique to perform if compared to other treatments, to reduce the amount of RSU that is thrown into final disposal. To determine what type of management is optimal, a field visit was made to find out what were the shortcomings or weaknesses that occurred in the management of RSU citizens and competent entities were interviewed to find out their dissatisfaction and needs; surveys were conducted with citizens to determine the most acceptable proposal options for the RSU management plan. Citizen participation plays a very important role in the implementation of any type of RSU management plan in La Victoria canton. To this end, citizens must be aware of the reality of RSU storage, transport and evacuation services, which will motivate them to become aware and change their environmental habits.
